Factory five build manual
Before me is a red fiberglass body and dozens of boxes that, I'm told, contain the raw ingredients of a car. Three employees help me gingerly lift the body off its tube-frame chassis. Then, we start wrenching. Today, our goal is to get this car rolling, with brakes, suspension, and tires. Almost immediately, I screw up. I bolt the lower control arm onto the chassis only to discover that I've used the wrong spacers. If I'd slowed down and read one step further in the assembly manual, I would've known better.
When founder Dave Smith walks in, I ask whether my handiwork is besmirching the company's good name. That's not something he worries about. Have you ever been deep into a piece of Ikea furniture and realized that you bungled something 15 steps back?
That's where I'm at. But I fix my mistakes and make progress. Soon enough, I'm lifting the 8. The suspension goes on, followed by the hubs and brakes. The wheels are especially satisfying, the whir and rattle of the impact driver tightening the lugs on the studs. I've been in here for three or four hours, but it feels like minutes.
Because the check engine light is not illuminated and there are no stored codes in the computer. We removed unnecessary wires—for example interior lighting and climate control—to save weight and simplify the wiring harness. We first installed almost the complete harness to ensure that the engine ran and then began the trimming. The picture on the right above shows the main bundle midway through the process. The engine fired on the first try. Fitting the body has been a challenge for most builders, but this was my second build, I had learned valuable lessons.
The main problems are i body shut lines and ii problems with the edges of the factory panels. Factory Five designed the to built without painting, a great cost saving.
I have left the car in factory red and I think it looks very good. For show quality, it should be painted. Before the body, I installed the seats and asked a friend to check the fit for tall persons. He is still very tall and reports that he fit comfortably. On the left below, we are fitting the hood and fenders.
You can see the opening for the headlights, and if your look closely, the cooling vent cutouts on the hood itself. On the right is the side panel that goes from in front of the door to the rear of the car.
The pictures below show the middle hood to fender shut lines during the fitting process. I have improved this since, but the lines are not perfect. The body edges are somewhat rough. As you can see on the left, there is some extra gel coat from the manufacturing process.
I cleaned this away from the rear bumper panel in the picture to the right, and it looks much better. I think this, and some other edges can be improved. The picture on the left shows the fender-bumper joint. There is a slight gap that I think can be improves with some sanding. The right picture shows where the bumper was cracked when the car was loaded onto a trailer for the state inspection. The crack, on the bottom of the bumper where it turns up, has been repaired and is difficult to see.
We had the windshield professionally installed. The installers remembered my first build and preferred the red body to the white originally produced by Factory Five. The state of Maryland requires two inspections, one to confirm ownership and compliance with state law and the second the regular state safety inspection.

No expense spared. Car is being sold as is. Inspections before you bid are welcome. The High Revving ci V8 has proven itself over and over again in he Camaro Z28 and is an amazing choice in this tube frame roadster. For starters, the House of Kolors Candy Apple Red paint finish 27 coats and Pear White racing stripes are gorgeous, and it cleanly extends to the underside of the car. It only has about miles on it since its completion about 6 years ago, so this thing is basically brand new!
Everything looks the part as well; the underside is just as beautiful as the topside and contains a lot of Factory Five components. The previous owner bought it and drove it in Pennsylvania, but only suitable weather.
They added new shocks and replaced bushings in front and rear suspension hardware. The 5. Titled as " Ford" Go to www. Mechanics: 5. Call Tom 7 Days a Week at ! Visit our 20, sq ft.
Model Cobra Replica. We can Sell it! Call us Today! But when you look at the time, money, and effort it takes to build your own, you'll realize how much you really just want a replica like this one with a V8 and an irresistible price.
Factory Five got the formula right adding welcomed amounts of room without taking away from the classic Cobra proportions. You'll feel the difference the moment you sit behind the wheel, but more on that in a moment.
First, just marvel at the company's 20 years of fiberglass Cobra knowledge. They understand the gentle European curves originally created by AC, and the aggressive fenders and hood that Carroll Shelby needed to harness all that added power. This body looks exceptional in dark blue, and more importantly, it has some serious durability from Factory Five. This one also gets the details right. The dual white stripes are an iconic touch, but they have a unique silver edging to match the dual roll hoops.
Of course the item that shines the brightest are the five-spoke Cobra R wheels. Plus, it wouldn't be a competition-style car without a flip-up gas cap. It keeps a traditional appearance inside with the low-back bucket seats, racing seatbelts, and forward curved gearshift.
A wood-rimmed steering wheel re-creates the Cobra look, and the dash offers a full array of Auto Meter gauges. For the driver this feels like a pure performance machine right down to the fire extinguisher on the transmission tunnel. Under the hood is a strong cubic-inch V8 with the great iconic Cobra valve covers and performance air filter. Best of all it's been barely broken in with less than 9, miles since the motor was built.
This one breathes nicely thanks to a four-barrel Holley carburetor and long tube headers. It all exits in polished side pipes so you can hear this awesome growl just as good as everyone else. Keeping all of this power under control is the five-speed manual transmission, four-wheel disc brake package, and grippy BF Goodrich g-Force tires. Even the battery has been relocated to the trunk so the weight distribution is better in the corners.
This has all the good looks of a Cobra from but on a Florida title. So this is retro fun with more modern components in a beautifully built package.
